Stoking the Flame – A Deep Yogic Immersion with Jo Buick & Alice Hobday

Stoking the Flame

A deep immersion Igniting your innate capacity to feel purposeful, connected, loved and  whole through traditional and contemporary yogic practices.

Friday 14  th   – Sunday 30  th   June 2019

Mala Dhara Yoga Retreat Center, Eco Resort

& Organic Farm

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Sometimes in life, we reach an intersection. Our world may be full and busy satisfying even, and yet there is a yearning for something quieter, deeper, richer. The ancient tradition of retreat provides an opportunity to step away from the rhythm and pace of daily life, in order to see things as they are – and to see ourselves as we truly are.

Stoking the Flame is an immersive and intentional yoga retreat experience held deep in the beautiful landscape of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Spread out over two weeks, this yoga retreat is designed to ‘stoke the flame’ of intention and purpose for those who are interested in diving deeper into their yoga practice, without the formalities of a yoga teacher training program.

Who is this immersion for?

Stoking the Flame is open to all who feel the calling to immerse deeply in this offering. Alice and Jo have trained over many years to facilitate and hold space for diverse groups of yoga practitioners with unique needs and intentions. They both believe wholeheartedly that yoga is a personal practice that starts from where we are at and are committed to facilitating experiences that are both inclusive and accessible.

For many people, retreat is a time of deep unfolding, self discovery, breakthrough and metamorphosis. Stoking the Flame is an opportunity to step away from the noise and information overload of daily life, and to reconnect with one’s breath, body and essential nature. To ‘stoke the flame’ is to ignite your innate capacity to feel purposeful, connected, loved and whole, just as you are.

This offering is for everyone. Our retreats are inclusive of all people, all bodies and all ages. We are proudly LGBTQIA+ friendly and welcoming of all.

Why is it important to practice together?

To come together on retreat creates special opportunities for connection and attunement both with others and with the natural environment. The experiences of community and support that arise via retreat represent an opportunity for growth and development, as we are always operating in relationship with the world and others. The process of learning in community is so revered, that it is described as a ‘kula’ or ‘community of the heart’ in Sanskrit and as similarly as a ‘sangha’ in Buddhism. Retreat represents a rare opportunity to spend time with like-minded individuals who share common interests, values and practices.

What does it mean to develop a self practice?

Whilst practicing together represents a vital component of retreat, an emphasis on Stoking the Flame is the development of a self-practice , complete with tools, resources and techniques that you can take with you anywhere that you go.

All yoga is designed to be modified and adapted for the individual, and an important part of this retreat is developing a self-practice that feels appropriate, useful and exciting for you. For some this may be a predominantly physical practice, whilst for others it may be more focused on practices that soothe the mind or for work with the breath. Whatever your intention and yoga practice, Alice and Jo are present to support and guide you as required.

About Thailand in June

Stoking the Flame is held in the monsoon season of June, a time when the ground is soft, the rain is warm, and the air is gentle. In Ayurveda, this is understood as Kaphic season characterized by great fertility, new beginnings and a sense of connectedness. This is an incredibly potent time for introspection and realignment. For these reasons, our retreat schedule includes spaciousness for private processing, reading, meditating and resting.

Class descriptions

Yoga

The Yoga classes are designed to consciously release holding patterns in the body while stimulating vital energy.  The movements in class are a powerful combination of fitness and movement as medicine.  Johnson teaches from an intuitive place of guiding each student to their fullest potential.  He has been teaching since 2008 and has an extensive background in hatha, vinyasa, kundalini and ANYA yogic techniques, as well as having training in martial arts, Pilates and GYROTONIC®.

Meditation

Meditation is practiced by millions as a means to help the mind release thoughts of painful memories of the past and anxious worries about the future, while helping to maintain focus on the present moment. Studies have proven that a regular meditation practice helps to activate feel-good chemicals in the brain like dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin, which increase happiness, improve memory, concentration, intuition, creativity and empathy, while neutralizing stress, anxiety, fear and anger. A Harvard MRI study showed that just 8 weeks of mindful meditation had measurable positive changes in the brain. Meditation also helps to build grey matter in the hippocampus, which is associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and self-control, and helps decrease grey matter in the amygdala, which plays a significant role in anxiety, stress and addictive behavior. On a spiritual level, meditation helps to build new neural pathways between your left and right brain hemispheres. When both sides of the brain work together harmoniously, one can gain access to their subconscious and conscious mind through deep meditative states. Meditation also has many physical benefits for the body as well such as regulating sleep cycle, anti-aging, and regulating hormones to help prevent weight gain. During the retreat, we will explore various types of meditation from classical yogic breathing techniques to more visual shamanic journeys that deepen our connection to our mind’s subconscious and conscious states, our emotions and our physical bodies

Ajna Light Meditation

The Ajna Light machine was developed by ex-Apple chip designer, Guy Harriman, in Chiang Mai Thailand and functions as a neural-stimulating computer lamp. This innovative and highly effective device easily and rapidly brings the user into a deeply relaxed, meditative state. It works through a combination of ancient and modern scientific techniques. Using very powerful photic light stimulation to induce the same brainwaves states seen in advanced meditation practitioners. The light sequences will take you through a series of deep meditative states with ease. The light passes through the retina stimulating the pineal gland, and allowing the hypnogogic (between sleep and wakefulness, a deep meditation) trance state to be induced. The Ajna Light is a spiritual tool to access greater intuition, learning, and exploring your inner consciousnessJohnson has developed a guided meditation journey to induce an even more profound state of healing. He will guide you through a series of powerful visualizations that will empower your ability to exist in a higher realm of consciousness as you explore your relationship with your Lower Self, Higher Self and Life Purpose. This meditative journey has been a catalyst of deep change, bringing new meaning into our daily life while repairing the relationship with our true selves

Lunar Steam Bath
Imagine soaking up the sunset across the rice fields – with the mountains of Mae On in the distance – as you emerge from a traditional Thai herbal steam.  The herbal steams come with many ingredients, but are most usually mixed with:  Kefir Lime Leaf, Lemongrass, Pandanas, Turmeric. Galangal and more.

As the sun sets and the fire starts, enjoy multiple rounds of steaming and herbal tea.  After washing off your edible body scrub and camp out along the fire and maybe take one more swim in the saltwater pool before retiring for the end of a perfect evening.

Healthy Thai Cooking Workshop

The brilliant chefs and staff at the Eco-Resort source produce right from their own backyard and are passionate about teaching people how to cook healthy meals using fresh organic ingredients.
With the amazing fresh ingredients and practical hands-on experience, you will be able to cook like the Thai!  It’s an experience that is more than just cooking.  You will learn to distinguish among different kinds of organic herbs, vegetables and fruits that they proudly grow on the premises.  It’s a truly unique experience forged in the spirit of love and passion for delicious and nutritious food.

Charity – We will be donating 5% of our profits to the Child’s Dream Organization in Chiang Mai.

Johnson Chong

Exodus is a yoga teacher, pilates teacher, bodyworker, healer and light worker.  He has had a blessed journey in meeting teachers and guides along his path who have illuminated his fullest potential in the ways of self-realization and self-mastery through the various traditions of movement and the healing arts.

He first discovered yoga and the art of movement exploration in Acting Conservatory. Since then, he has studied with yoga masters like Sri Dharma Mittra, David Life, Sharon Gannon and Duncan Wong. He received his initial 200 hour Vinyasa Yoga Training from Joschi Yoga Institute in New York, a 500 hour training in Akhanda Yoga, Classical Kundalini and Hatha Raja with Yogirishi Vishvaketu in India. And has completed over a 1000 hours of continuing education with his lifelong teacher and mentor Courtney Bauer of the ANYA method (Applied Neo Yogic Awareness)  in New York.

It was also through the ANYA method that he discovered the Pilates work, for which he is grateful as it deepened his kinesthetic knowledge of human form and function.  In a constant pursuit of learning and immersing in life as a lifelong student, he has also completed the Core Align 1 Training, Gyrotonic Level 1, Advanced Thai Massage Certification (Lotus Palm Thai Massage School), ANYA Bodyworker Certification, Ayurvedic Massage Certification with Dr. Usha Vaisnava, Master Usui Reiki Healer Certification with Shantih Mai and Master Abhed Reiki Healer Certification and Osho Meditations with Swami Amitanand. Currently, he is undergoing shamanic studies in the Munay-ki lineage under the guidance of Leantara Shah.

With a professional background and training in the theatre, growing with martial arts, theatre & dance in high school,  he has always had a strong affinity towards movement.  And It was not until during his professional acting training that he began to experience mind body somatics from yoga teachers, osteopaths, and other movement specialists that he started to delve deeper into the connection between the body, the mind and its interdependent relationship.

Soon enough, as if the mind and body was not enough to grasp, Johnson intuitively gravitated towards the spiritual, the mystical and the esoteric realm of healing. He intuitively tuned into the infinite vast world of energy and light and encountered more than he ever expected through divine right timing.  For the past decade, he has received healings from Native America Shamans of Mayan and Andean lineages, crystal healers, sound healers, divine healers, angelic healers, cosmic healers, witches, baliyans, priests and priestesses, and has met all types of astrologers, numerologists, acupuncturists, morphologists, psychics, mediums, and the list goes on.

He received third eye and kundalini initiations from two saints who played a massive role in the upgrade of his energetic capacities, Sri Amritanandamayi Ma and Mother Meera, through multiple darshans and blessings over the years.  And through the many divine blessings in his life, he has had the gift of manifesting into reality exactly what he needs from the universe at any given moment.

His experiences have brought him all around the world sharing his love of movement, meditation and healing, all in the name of helping others realize their own path towards Self Mastery and to realize that there are many paths, but only one that will work uniquely for each individual.  And that path must be forged with the intention to embody the most essential principle: Love thyself to heal thyself.  And it is with this message he wishes to empower his students on their journey of becoming the best versions of themselves.

Fierce Compassion An Ashtanga Yoga Immersion Retreat

Fierce Compassion

An Ashtanga Yoga Immersion Retreat

December 12th – December 18th 2018

Mala Dhara Yoga Retreat Center

Chiang Mai Thailand

WHAT, WHY, HOW?

Ashtanga Yoga has a reputation as a fierce and fiery yoga practice. What are we truly doing when we turn our hearts, mind and bodies to this yoga practice? Why do we take to our mats on a daily basis? How can we overcome our samskaras to unlock our empathetic natures in a  world that desperately needs fierce and determined compassion?

Join Kerill Yoga on this December retreat at Chiang Mai Mala Dhara which takes us on adventures to confront those elements that block us from truly opening our hearts to compassion. By understanding our true relationship to our world, we can begin to recognize and freely cultivate our own authenticity. In knowing where our personal and shared challenges lie and with tools to assist us in overcoming them, we become a part of the change that is so desperately needed in our modern world.

Together, on this retreat, we experience ethically sourced vegan food, earth created villas, national parks and environmentally designed and protected adventure locations. Our yoga journey takes us into the path of fierce compassion through classes on the nature and overcoming the obstacles to compassion, empathetic hands on assists, gratitude practices, meditation, pranayama and asana practice.

“Progress in the practice is not linear. Just as every day starts afresh, every breath is new, every movement is as it has never been before. Mindful awareness of such progress allows us to find our innate equanimity and compassion. It is my belief that our presence in this practice can bring universal transformation.”

Kerill has been a dedicated yoga practitioner for over 10 years. She encourages her students to work with the integrity of their bodies and breath to overcome the barriers that prevent their practices of unconditional compassion. She has a true love of the yogic tradition, modern sciences and the nitty gritty of life.  Bringing these together with a touch of humour, she challenges students to step outside their habits and break free of their self-imposed limitations and fears. She believes strongly in combining anatomical integrity, breathwork and mindfulness as the means of improving the human condition.  It is through this that she sees the true workings of yoga in practice.

Kerill is a Yoga Alliance Experienced 500Hour Teacher, a registered PreNatal Teacher and has undergone extensive training in yoga for therapy/rehabilitation, pranayama and in specialized anatomy. She has had a dedicated Ashtanga asana practice for over a decade and has been teaching for over 7 years. She has held specialized yoga workshops in Australia, USA, China and Macau. Kerill also teaches complimentary yoga practices for sports, recreational and professional physical activities. These include boxing, golf, acrobatics, dance, motorcycle stunt riding, rock climbing and high diving.

Kerill is the Macau ambassador for Yoga Gives Back

She invites students to come to the mat, to dig deeply and find their inner strengths through the awareness and acceptance of impermanence – to find support for life’s challenges but also strength to embrace opportunity free of fear. For her, the philosophy and practice of yoga is a gift to human kind. Kerill feels blessed to follow in the lineage of her teachers and endeavours to honour their wisdom through her understanding of the practice, science, humour and herself.

Although a teacher, Kerill primarily considers herself a student.

Prior to his retirement, she was a student of Michel Besnard (assisted by Roslyn Ying). Her annual studies continue with Paul Dallaghan (pranayama), Arielle Nash-Degagne (anatomy), Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor (asana, philosophy, spirituality). She feels honoured and blessed to call them teachers and friends.

When Kerill is not practicing or teaching, she can be found living her dharma – climbing, hiking, cycling, motorbike riding, surfing, studying or  simply experimenting in her plant based kitchen domain.

The Embodiment & Bodywork Immersion is a journey. A journey into the senses to uncover our very own physical and subtle mind-body mapping, bringing to our consciousness the way we inhabit in our environment, and how we respond to elements and people around us. It is a journey to unearth the treasure trove of our innate healing through breath, movement, bodywork, meditation and self inquiry.

The embodiment approach in this immersion will shine a light on our habitual but sometimes unconscious neurological patterning that manifest into how we breath, our holding gait, and our reactivity to circumstances. These are manifested through pre-dispositions, deep-seated patterns, trauma, as well as years of conditioning.

Bringing together mindfulness based techniques with somatic tools, we will gain more clarity into our own emotions and behaviour as an embodied biological process, this will enable us to live and move with greater ease and grace.

This will be 2 x 50 hours immersion for yoga practitioners, bodyworkers, movers, dancers, coaches, caregivers… anyone who is looking to understand the pathways of connectivity between the body, mind and spirit. We will work with movement through the lens of embryology, developmental patterns, fascia and connective tissue. Delving into breathwork, yoga therapy applications, traditional Hatha Yoga principles, Yoga Nidra, Restorative Yoga, visualisations, vocalisations, self inquiry and bodywork.

When we explore from within through a sensory rather than cognitive approach, our mind can de-clutter and re-wire towards a moment-to-moment presence in wellness.

Be EMPOWERED to access your own transformation and healing. You will also be able to apply these tools in teaching yoga or movement, self-care, or in offering tactile touch or bodywork to support your clients and your loved ones.

COURSE DETAILS

This program keeps evolving every year as I continue to expand the scope of my work and study in the areas of therapeutics, somatic therapy, movement education and neuroscience.

This year, the central theme will revolve around the Therapeutic Applications through the lens of Developmental Patterns – in which I’ll be covering:

  • Embryology and how we can further understand our mind-body blueprint through our developmental journey
  • Fascia & Connective Tissues through the phases of developmental patterns – inquiring into how movement evolves and shapes us through evolution, environment, emotions, culture, habits and how we can explore and repattern through embodied anatomy, relearning, and deep rest.
  • Spatial Medicine: Tap into our kinesthetic and spatial intelligence through proprioception and interoception by refining the nuances of our awareness in a sensory-based learning environment.
  • Nervous system regulation and therapeutic healing through the Vagus Nerve – this part is of special importance to those dealing with chronic pain as well as for teachers / therapists / coaches out there who’d like to understand and explore how to hold space and co-regulate through breath work, yoga therapy and somatic movement.
  • Hands-on bodywork: as usual there will be a significant amount of time dedicated to tactile work. The power of applying a gentle touch to heal is formidable. In addition to hands-on techniques, we will also cover ethics, permission, client-therapist relationship, intention, attention, therapist posture integrity and self-care.

This will not be a typical yoga immersion.

We will be working with the tools of yoga therapy ~ movement, asanas, sound, visualisation, meditation techniques, Yoga Nidra, breathwork and pranayama… grounded by a knowledge of kinesiology, myofascial meridiens, embodied anatomy, neuroscience, understanding of chronic conditions etc. In addition, we will also look at some classical yoga philosophy and yogic texts, and discuss how they can be applied in contemporary therapeutic settings.

What I’ll be sharing is a distillation of the different aspects of my studies from Hatha yoga to movement science, a decade of teaching experience, as well as drawing from case studies of the work I’ve done. I personally feel that it is important to communicate the meldings of these teachings and principles that I embody as a student, teacher and therapist, and then leave you to explore and seek out the answers yourself.

“I’ve finished Daphne’s 100hr embodiment training half a year ago, and I’m still feeling the profound changes in my on-the-mat and off-the-mat practice until today!

Her inquiry-based approach on deep sensing and awareness is such a contemporary and important approach rising above the many yoga schools that are constantly popping up today.

The 2 weeks of her YTT training offered so much more than just cognitive and experiential knowledge of anatomy and asanas, but transformed my deepest sense of awareness in my body. I left feeling like a newborn who never tasted the true feeling of motion, and of being alive and conscious in and of my body. I keep walking, moving and dancing with a sense of pleasure and joy brought about by the awareness and perception of my body as fluid, gentle and a well integrated unit. Keeping in mind Daphne’s first and last question “What is embodiment to you?” and constantly developing new answers to it 🙂

I can’t wait for her next training and I highly recommend her to everybody who’s interested in sculpting their yoga from within!”

~ Lucie Krobova, Dancer & Dance Teacher, Amsterdam

“My experience from the immersion was eye-opening. Over the past years, I knew that I was not doing something right, but could not figure out what it was. Daphne identified the specific misalignments in my body and guide me into finding them. She articulated very well in how bodies are supposed to move, what habits to maintain to keep the body healthy. I can already feel that my musculoskeletal structure changing and my joints are better aligned. Before the course, I used my body parts to do Yoga, trying to fit my body into the asanas. Now I am using Yoga to keep my body aligned, with healthier and better positioning for the different part of my body.  I have had many issues with tilted pubic bones, twisted spine, knee pain and feet pain, but they are now better with the right exercises. They also brought me a positive effects for non-yoga activities. I enjoy occasional social dancing, and when I went to a practice, I can feel that my posture has improved, and my body and legs are not as tired and aching as before. I believe that continuous practice, awareness and mindfulness are the key. All the best and thanks again for your insights and dedication.” ~Yoko Yamoto, NGO worker, Japan

Awakening Ananda Yoga Retreat Poster for Cole Chance and Echo Windmer's Retreat at the Mala Dhara Yoga Retreat Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand i October 2017

AWAKENING ANANDA Adventure Yoga Retreat Cole Chance & Echo Widmer

AWAKENING ANANDA

Cole Chance and Echo Widmer

Adventure Yoga Retreat October 22 – 29

Chiang Mai, Thailand

In yoga philosophy it is said that God is “sat chit ananda” (existence consciousness bliss). Paramhansa Yogananda adds that Ananda is different from temporary joy that comes from sense pleasures such as eating, listening to music, and seeing beautiful things. It is also not a monotonous joy that is always the same. Ananda refers to a joy that “changes and dances itself in many ways to enthrall your mind and keep your attention occupied and interested forever”.

This adventure retreat is meant to be a retreat from the daily grind. A retreat away from whatever it is that is keeping you from fully expressing yourself as the light that you are. This is a time for conscious individuals to come together on a journey of truth, of compassion, of play, of self inquiry and of selfless service.  A journey towards BLISS.

We will spend much of our time together in commUNITY enjoying sunrise meditations, morning and evening asana practices, Thai Massage training, dharma talks, and various creative workshops.. Aside from our daily yoga schedules we will step outside our comfort zones, and take adventures into the beauty of Northern Thailand during the days.
We want more than anything, for our students to leave this retreat with open eyes, open hearts, and open minds. Life is much to short to spend anytime in the dark. We must awaken to all that is around us. And it is up to us to choose what path we take. We can either fear change, challenge, and risk. Or we can embrace is fully…. and at the same time fundamentally change our perspective of the world around us as well as our participation with and in it.

YOUR HOSTS
Cole Chance

Eight years ago, I took my very first yoga class at a drug and alcohol treatment center. I was painfully broken.  But this crack allowed the sweetness of the yoga practice a sliver of an opening to seep through.  Though I wasn’t ready to change my life at that point, a seed had been planted that there may, just possibly, be another way to live.  Eventually, through several more years of crazy and chaos, I realized the mat, the practice, was my only way to freedom and I’ve held on ever since.  What a ride! Yoga has supported me to reclaim my inner power, peel back the armor and layers I had been suffocating under, and begin the fascinating process of coming back to wholeness.
While our stories may look different on the outside, we are much more similar than we may appear, as everyone is recovering from something.  The common human thread is a disconnection from self; an isolation from who we are and the world around us. Yoga means to yoke, to connect, to create union.  It supports us to balance and harmonize our lives in an ever changing and challenging world.  We can ALL move closer to wholeness.  That thing that is holding you down can also be your ticket to breaking through to something amazing.
Whether through a vigorous asana, the stillness of meditation, or diving deep into the beautiful philosophy of yoga, I hope to support you to find your own unique dance towards freedom.
As well as teaching yoga, I’m also an instructor in the beautiful practice of Thai Yoga Massage.  I’m so thrilled to also be sharing this bodywork with you in the land where it has flourished!
I urge you to stay curious about you, always ask why, and never stop exploring the world around and the world inside. Which is exactly why I’m so excited to create this journey for you! This retreat allows the important space for play, adventure, as well as quiet and introspection.  All the things wrapped up in the stunning setting of Northern Thailand!
Please join the magnificent Echo and I on a sojourn to awaken Ananda! To awaken to BLISS! See you in Thailand loves!

ECHO GIESEL WIDMER

Yoga at first was very difficult for me.  I felt very unsettled on my mat in a room full of strangers, and the pace of the practice did not organically flow with me. Although I truly enjoyed powerful asana, it was very difficult for me to find peace with it because I was constantly looking for more challenge in my practice. I became a very power loving yogi, and was constantly looking to strengthen my practice physically. Over the years my yang nature grew exponentially until I decided that I wanted to teach yoga. For many of those previous years, yoga was purely physical to me. I of course began to really connect to my breath practice, because it helped me stay focused and strong in my asana practice….but meditation was always a struggle. The calmer, more yin side of yoga, had not yet reached me. It was not until I was teaching for a couple of years that I found a softer, more intimate side to yoga. I began to truly balance my yin and yang sides. I began to really appreciate stillness in my mind, breath and body. I began to notice the small subtleties in my practice, and I began to truly fall in love with the practice. I have spent the last couple of years sharing my practice around the world with students of all pedigrees and intentions. I think that there is a practice for all types of people, all types of learners, all types of energies. That is how I got to where I am today. My hope with leading YOGA+ADVENTURE Retreats, is to teach what I have learned along the way, and help to create a more open and playful community of conscious individuals and practitioners.

7 DAYS OUTSIDE OF CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
OCTOBER 22nd, 2017 (Sunday)- OCTOBER 29th, 2017 (Sunday)

Meditation + YOGA+ Hiking +THAI MASSAGE
 Mopeding + surprises…..shhhhh….

THAI YOGA MASSAGE

This type of massage has its roots in the ancient Indian systems of Yoga, Buddhism, and Ayurveda. Called the “lazy man’s yoga” in Thailand, this meditative flow weaves together energy, loving-kindness intention, and mindful techniques to dissolve blockages and alleviate stress. It combines assisted stretching, acupressure, and compression to improve flexibility and balance the body’s energy. It is fully clothed, uses no oil, and performed on a mat on the floor so you can take this sister art to yoga anywhere you choose to roam; and it makes you even more popular with your friends as an added bonus.

MOPEDING

It is important to note that Thailand is most easily accessible by moped, so it is in our plans to have students rent mopeds some of the days for some adventures into the beautiful Thai mountains. Please contact me if you are uncomfortable driving a moped, do not have an international driver’s license, or want to learn to ride a moped but are nervous.
If you are interested in mopeding in Bali make sure to go by your local AAA and pick up an International Driver’s License for $25. It is simple and all you need is a current driver’s license.  Also if you want to ride on a moped but do not want to drive, there will be many of us that can be the drivers, while those not so comfortable driving can be passengers on the back.  Make sure to contact me if you have any issues with this.

ABOUT MALA DHARA AND SURROUNDING AREAS

A perfect getaway about 40 minutes outside Chiang Mai city center. Gorgeous buildings, landscape, view, yoga shala and pool. Kind, friendly and comfortable atmosphere to help you rejuvenate and unwind. The saltwater pool is a great place to just chill out and relax.  And the restaurant serves delicious food. If you are interested in seeing Chaing Mai look into booking more time before or after the retreat to explore on your own or with a friend. Perfect opportunity to extend your trip and have the freedom for more adventure.

CHIANG MAI

Nestled amongst forested foothills, Chiang Mai is much older than it first appears. During the city’s medieval heyday, almost everything was made of teak hauled by elephant from the surrounding rainforest, with the notable exception of its towering wát. The monasteries still remain, centred on ancient brick chedi (stupas) in a remarkable range of shapes and styles, but the gaps between them have been filled in with modern Thai houses and traveller hotels. Despite this, the historic centre of Chiang Mai still feels overwhelmingly residential, more like a sleepy country town than a bustling capital.

THOUGHTS ON WHAT TO PACK, AND WHAT NOT TO PACK
Sunscreen
Sunhats
Swimtrunks and Swimsuits
Don’t bring more than one bag. Trust me, you won’t want to lug it around with you. Ideally you should bring a backpack, and a small purse or day bag.

DON’T PACK TOO MUCH! I repeat, DON’T DO IT! Pack the basics. If worse comes to worse, you can buy whatever you need at your destination. Just remember that.

Leave room for souvenirs in your bag! And that goes back to not packing too much…

CLOTHES
2-3 pairs of leggings/comfortable pants for adventures and yoga of course.
5-7 pairs of underwear – Make sure they’re comfortable and easy to air-dry. It is hot in Thailand, and most clothes are washed and then hung out to dry. So bring ones you do not mind hanging out for the world to see, haha.
Thongs, or flip flops and bring one pair of tennis shoes for hiking
1 fleece/coverup – This is ideal for your flight, chilly evenings or for covering your arms and upper body on long sunny moped rides.
Ladies maybe bring a few sun dresses, or plan on purchasing some at the markets. I promise you will not regret this decision.

SHOES
1 pair of flip flops – to wear in your shower and room
1 pair of hiking shoes – make sure they cover your toes and have a good grip! Sandals would work too.
1 pair of flats or sandals – for your dressy moments

TOILETRIES
Please use natural products.  We are staying at a eco resort that is very mindful of the effects of chemicals and we know you are too!
2 in 1 Shampoo/Conditioner
Soap/Body Wash
Toothbrush/ Toothpaste
Sunscreen (It is more expensive here)

Deodorant
Razor
Brush and/or Comb
Ladies- Hair Ties and bobby pins
Pads/Tampons/ or Diva Cup (this last one is a gamechanger ladies) – These aren’t common in some countries in Asia

OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS
Very important….if you want to drive a moped in Indonesia head to your local AAA (US) AA ( outside the US) branch, and purchase a $25 International Drivers License. It will last you a year, and it is necessary for driving internationally although extremely easy to get.

A money belt or pouch to keep your important items such as passport, money and visa info in

A small shoulder purse, backpack or fanny pack is always nice to have, but can be purchased abroad for cheap!

1-2 empty plastic bags – for your dirty clothes and other unknown opportune times!

Sunglasses

Bug spray – Don’t risk getting covered in bug bites.

Camera (and maybe a memory stick)- An iPhone will do too.

A book or eReader – We will be doing a great deal of traveling, so bring something to read!

A journal and a pen – to track your journey!

Headphones and some sort of music to listen to during your travels

A couple of granola bars or snacks for when you’re on the go or traveling
All essential medicines, and prescriptions you may need. But remember that medicine abroad is reliable and CHEAP, so don’t bring your whole medicine cabinet. Just some essentials like allergy medicine, birth control, prescriptions, etc.

Awakening the Chakaras Yoga Retreat with East Meets West Yoga Retreats

Awakening the Chakras – Chiang Mai yoga and meditation retreat

THE SEVENFOLD JOURNEY

The chakra system is the rainbow bridge that takes us on a journey through and to our selves. Each chakra is like a stepping stone, and with each step we gain a greater understanding of our bodies, health, psychology, relationships, personalities, emotions, past and connection to the divine. Though many study the chakras through a Kundalini lens, we will take a step back and look at the chakras through many lenses, steeped in science, psychology, tantra & hatha yoga, anatomy and philosophy.

Each day will lead us to a new chakra, and each day will look different. We’ll incorporate asanas, meditations, visualizations, psychology, philosophy, anatomy, mantras, mudras, stories and other activities to fully immerse ourselves and develop a deeper understanding of this ancient system.

We’ll also be looking at the “health” of each of your chakras – considering the physical attributes, qualities, imbalances and balances. We hope that by the end of the retreat, you’ll have a good idea of which chakras are balanced and imbalanced, and that will provide you with some invaluable insight into your own transformation.

The chakra system is one that I’ve personally used for my own healing, and it’s my favorite type of yoga to teach. I look forward to journeying through this rainbow bridge with you this New Years!

Dive into a different chakra each day…
Day 1: Root Chakra
Ground into your body and explore your ancestral roots with a group sauna, fire and drum circle.Day 2: Sacral Chakra
Explore the water element while soaking in sacred hot springs. Celebrate the New Year with an ecstatic DJ dance party.Day 3: Solar Plexus Chakra

Invite transformation into your life as you welcome 2018 in with a sunrise yoga session & intention setting workshop.Day 4: Heart Chakra
Learn the art of love, gratitude and compassion through interacting with gentle giants at a sustainable Elephant Sanctuary. Day 5: Throat Chakra
Purify and open the throat center through song with a beautiful evening Kirtan & Cacao Ceremony.Day 6: Third Eye Chakra
Invoke ancient wisdom through exploring Chiang Mai’s beautiful temples & channel it with a group art collaboration.

Day 7: Crown Chakra
Come together and understand unity on a whole new level through a fun, connective partner yoga workshop.

Namaste, I am the founder of East West Retreats, a 200-hour yoga teacher, Reiki Healer, and ceremony space holder. I am currently residing in Chiang Mai, Thailand for 6 months out of the year, and spend the other 6 months traveling to the most sacred lands out there, learning the way healers, masters and yogis connect to the divine.

Yoga, for me, is a vehicle for clearing out what doesn’t serve you anymore – physically, spiritually and mentally – to make room for your true, authentic self. And that’s exactly what I hope to give to my students.

I began to immerse myself in the art of connecting yoga & meditation in my 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, India (“The Land Of Sages”). This immersion developed into a huge passion for blending the ancient wisdom and traditions of the East with the fluid, ecletic elements of yoga from the West. Because of this, my teaching incorporates many styles, philosophies and traditions including Hinduism, Daoism, Buddhism, Tantra, Qi Gong, Ayurveda, dance and Reiki. My teachers and biggest inspirations include Pachamama, Yogananda Paramahansa, Anodea Judith, B.K.S. Iyengar, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, Alan Watts, Paul Diamond and Leslie Kaminoff.

Tiffany Langdon

Currently residing in Louisville, I am completely dedicated to practicing, teaching and studying yoga and yoga philosophy. Therefore, the seat between teacher and student is always rotating.  My interest in yoga was piqued in Louisville, Kentucky around 2003 when I began attending yoga classes out of curiosity. I deepened my practice when I moved to Chicago and started exploring other lineages of yoga. Once I arrived in Austin in 2011, I felt motivated and inspired by all my teachers to begin my journey in a yoga teacher training course and completed it in 2012.

I teach Hatha Flow classes that involve fluid movement and body alignment with carefully chosen postures to strengthen the body and to prepare the body for meditation.  My classes are challenging but fun, safe, light-hearted and accessible to all levels.  I invite every student to be satisfied with their yoga practice as it is today and to enjoy their own journey. I’m currently completing my 500-RYT studies with a concentration in Tantra Yoga and have found myself immersed in yoga philosophy and Hindu mythology teachings.

FAQ

Got a question? Here are answers to your most frequently asked questions about your upcoming retreat!
How do I book the retreat?
In order to reserve your spot, you’ll need to pay a $250 non-refundable deposit. Your spot will not be officially confirmed until you pay your deposit, due within 7 days of your booking. Once you pay your deposit, you can choose to pay for the retreat in full, or consider a payment plan (see below). All payments for the retreat are due 30 days before departure. What payment plans are available?
Typically, we’ll split the cost of the retreat into 4 manageable payments for you. All payments will be due 30 days before your retreat departure. What date should I book my outbound flight for?
The retreat will officially begin on the evening of December 28th so plan to book your flight out of your home country into Bangkok or Chiang Mai for the evening of December 26th and then another flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai on the morning of December 28th. This may mean spending an evening in Bangkok, but if you need help finding the right timings, let us know! Please plan to arrive in Chiang Mai no later than 4pm on December 28th. Please note that while all international flights fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport, some domestic flights to Chiang Mai may depart from another airport (Don Mueang International Airport). Please check your tickets to avoid any hiccups in your travel! What date should I book my return flight for?
The retreat will officially end the morning of January 5th at 11am, so please book your flight at least 2 hours ahead of that time. Be careful and make sure you leave enough time for yourself between your flight from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. Please note that while all international flights fly out of Suvarnabhumi Airport, some domestic flights from Chiang Mai may depart from another airport (Don Mueang International Airport). Please check your tickets to avoid any hiccups in your travel! What airport do I fly into?

To get to Chiang Mai, you can book a direct flight from your designated US city, or for a cheaper option, fly into Bangkok, and then book a domestic flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai via
Air AsiaThai AirwaysNok Air, Lion AirBangkok Airways or Thai Smile. How do I get to the retreat center?
When you arrive at the Chiang Mai airport, our staff will be waiting with a sign that has “East West Retreats” on it and we’ll make our way to the retreat center together. The Chiang Mai airport is around 1 hour from the retreat center, so only a short drive away via taxi or shuttle. How much will the flight cost me?
Typically, a flight into Bangkok will cost around $700 – $1,200, depending on the size of the airport you fly out of. We recommend flying out of a huge hub airport (ie. Houston, Chicago) to save an incredible amount of money. We have never paid more than $900 for a flight to Thailand, so keep your eyes peeled for great prices. For your flight from Bangkok or Chiang Mai, it will only cost you around $30 (for real!). Also, don’t forget about trip insurance, which is usually around $49 per person. How far in advance should I book my flight?
We recommend booking a flight 3-4 months in advance, although you can find cheap prices until around 60 days before departure. Booking on weekdays helps lower the prices as well. Once you book your flight, please email us your itinerary so we know when to expect you!Do I need a visa to travel to Thailand?
If you are a U.S. citizen tourist staying in Thailand for fewer than 30 days, you do not require a visa to enter the country, but your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your entry into Thailand.Should I purchase trip insurance?
Trip insurance is highly recommended. Insurance usually provides coverage for trip cancellation, travel delays, lost luggage, medical emergencies and more. Thankfully, trip insurance can be purchased with your flight for typically around $49 or less.Do I need to get vaccinated before traveling to Thailand?
It isn’t required by law to enter Thailand, but we highly recommend playing it safe when traveling. The Center for Disease Control recommends all travelers get Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations. My personal opinion is to only get Hep A, as Typhoid is a bacterial infection and can be treated with antibiotics. Most insurance agencies won’t cover them, but here are some affordable options:

  • Google “cheap hepatitis a vaccine” and see if any government agencies in your state offer free or affordable Hep A. For example, this Austin-based website has tons of clinics listed, so check them out. I paid around $30 for mine.
  • Walgreens does Typhoid vaccinations for only $90 with no appointment required.

PLEASE NOTE that most clinics the CDC lists on their website will charge you an outrageous amount of money for these vaccines. You CAN find them much cheaper by using the resources listed above or finding them on your own.

What’s the weather like in Chiang Mai in December?
The cool season lasts from early December to February and is the most popular time to visit Chiang Mai, weather-wise. During the day the temperatures max out at a pleasant 30°C (86°F) but bring a jacket or sweatshirt because the temperature drops rapidly after sunset, sometimes to as low as 10°C (50°F).

What kind of yoga will we be practicing?
We’ll be mainly practicing a Vin/Yin flow, which tends to be a slower, more mindful pace. Almost like yin and yang, Yin/Vin is a 50/50 combination of vinyasa and restorative yin yoga. Half the class will be active and energetic, focusing on sun salutations and strengthening poses, while the other half will be done primarily on the floor with the use of props and blankets. The joined practice of Vinyasa and Yin yoga invites students to restore their energy, strengthen the body and immune system, nourish the fluids in the joints, encourage organ health, promote deeper sleep, and calm the mind. The yin and yang qualities of the classes will help students find a healthy balance in their fast paced, busy lives. Please note, if
you are looking for a power yoga retreat where you’ll be sweating bullets after doing 15 sun salutations, this is not the retreat for you.

How long will we be doing yoga and meditating, anyways?
Because we are combining yoga and adventure in our retreat, we will be containing our yoga practice into one solid 2-hour practice first thing in the morning, along with a 15-30 minute meditation practice. Our evenings will be spent doing group discussions, activities, connective exercises and simply relaxing, so please be prepared to connect with those around you in a deep and authentic way.

What if I’m new to yoga?
New to yoga? This is the perfect place to start your practice! We’d be delighted to have you, and will take care and make sure your alignment is creating a safe practice for you. And don’t worry if you’ve never heard of a chakra before, because we’ll be learning about them from a beginner’s lens!

I’m an introvert and don’t like group exercises. Is this retreat for me?
If you’re an introvert, this may not be the right space for you. Our retreats are very community-oriented, and we’ll be spending a lot of time together. In every single retreat we’ve ever hosted, we often leave feeling like family.

What happens if something emotional comes up for me on the retreat?
Our number one concern for all retreats we hold is to offer a safe space for you to be completely vulnerable and 100% authentically you. We invite you to embrace the shadows and discomfort that might come up, and will be there with you through the journey to hold loving space for you. Remember, the more you put into this retreat, the more you’ll get out.

What if I want to travel after the retreat?
This is a great idea! Glad you asked – because traveling in Thailand is very cheap and easy! We recommend checking out Chiang Mai close by, or maybe heading to the islands for some fun in the sun! If you’re interested in traveling but don’t want to plan, we offer trip planning starting at $100 USD, where we’ll book your accommodations, transportation, activities, and give you places of interest to check out!

What kind of vibe should I expect on this retreat?
This retreat is going to be holding space for some deep inner work, so come prepared to be vulnerable and do some serious connecting with those around you. To balance the depth, you’ll also find yourself feeling light and giddy on our daily adventures, checking out the local culture around us. Generally those who do best at our retreats aren’t afraid to go deep, love mindful movement, want to connect with others around them, don’t mind a surprise adventure, are flexible, and love the idea of community.

Is the deposit for this retreat refundable?
At this time, all deposits paid towards our retreats are non-refundable. However, we will gladly transfer the credit to you or a guest for a future retreat.

What is your refund policy?
Please see our full Policies page here for complete details on our refund policy. Generally, any cancellations made 60 days or more before a retreat are 100% refundable, and any cancellations made less than 30 days before are not eligible for any refund.
